Tamworth Distilling, Small Batches with a Big Future

Tamworth Distilling is quickly becoming a household name throughout the state of New Hampshire and beyond. In the handful of years in which they’ve been open, Tamworth Distilling has exploded, expanding their collection of scratch-made spirits to include over 50 unique spirits, several of which are stocked in our New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets, and offered at restaurants around the Granite State. However, their expansion, both to their inventory and the locations where their products are offered, is not without great thought and a focus on their roots.

History is deeply embedded in everything which Tamworth Distilling creates. From their bestselling spirits such as White Mountain Vodka and Chocorua Rye Whiskey, to the location of their distillery in historic Tamworth, New Hampshire.

At the distillery, they like to state that, “Our recipes are born from the crops we grow, and the histories buried in the soil below.” This statement embodies Tamworth Distilling’s approach. As a distillery, they are constantly looking back, not only to their own history but to the artists, authors, and innovators of the 19th-century Transcendentalists in New England. This reverence of the past seeps into everything Tamworth Distilling produces, providing inspiration for their products and insight into the ingredients they choose to use. Most of the spirits produced at Tamworth Distilling are in part developed using old fashioned recipes, techniques, and ingredients which have been long-forgotten by more modern distillers. From start to finish, each of their products embodies their scratch-made ethos: local, house-milled grain, pure water, herbs and botanicals from the woods and their garden, and local fruits and vegetables. As the demand for their products has grown steadily, their batches have remained just as small and high-quality as they always have been.

This connection to the past serves Tamworth Distilling well as they also dive headfirst into their future. Since getting many of their products, such as White Mountain Vodka and Gin into the New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets, the demand has greatly increased. So much so that their barrel house is bursting to its seams and their 250-gallon copper still is always in steady use. But, even with the ever-rising demand for their products, they won’t be leaving their traditional ways. Instead, they work to meld the two together, creating an environment where tradition and demand can work side by side, even if it takes a little extra effort. This effort is another aspect which is evident in every spirit they produce. At Tamworth Distilling no effort is ever spared. Everything they touch from the smallest botanical leaf to their massive still has been selected with the utmost care for a deliberate purpose.

This is especially evident in their spirits, each armed with unique flavors of unmatched quality. While they produce classic spirits exceptionally well, such as their White Mountain Vodka, Chocorua Rye Whiskey, and White Mountain Gin, they also love to explore more unique spirits such as their Tamworth Skiklubben Aquavit, William Whipple’s Winter Wheat, and Old Hampshire Blended Apple. In addition to the products which are carried by the New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets, the distillery also offers multiple other spirits, each one more creative than the next. Their distillery, which offers tours and tastings, is well worth the visit. It is a popular place for tourists and locals alike, offering visitors a sense of trekking back in time and also providing them with a well-rounded experience of the distillation process (see our Facebook page for a behind scenes video we created during our visit).

As for what is next, Tamworth Distilling has plenty of exciting items on the horizon. They are constantly experimenting and always have another new product in the works. Be sure to stop by one of our locations to buy a bottle of their next authentically New Hampshire spirit!
