Simple syrup is really just equal parts sugar and water brought to a simmer and whisked until fully incorporated. It can then be fully cooled to room temperature and poured into a clean jar with a lid and placed into your fridge for a shelf life of 30 days.
Many sweet cocktails call for simple syrup and because sugar itself does not dissolve well in cold liquid, the simple syrup makes for a quick emersion of sweetness.
Simple syrup can be used for more things than cocktails, such as coffee or iced tea or many other applications. It is a staple for any home cocktail bar though. You can purchase ready-made versions of this, or take a few minutes to make your own.
Simple Syrup
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
In a small saucepan, heat the ingredients to a slight boil, whisking until the sugar is fully dissolved. Let cool to room temperature and pour into a clean glass jar and secure the lid. Refrigerate and use for up to one month.
