Pairing Wine with Pizza

Wine certainly does not need to be reserved for special dinners and dishes, in fact, many wines pair excellently with pizza. From classic cheese to pineapple and ham, we have all the pairings you need to turn your next pizza night into an even tastier occasion.

A classic pepperoni pizza can be wonderful to pair with wine but keep in mind that the tomato sauce will have high levels of acidity so the wine you choose should be less acidic. Because of this, pick a medium-bodied red such as a lighter Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon. We recommend: Carnivor Cabernet Sauvignon.

Just as you would pair a meat-dish with a tannin-heavy red wine, think of your meat-lover’s pizza in the same way. Rich meat flavors and tannins go together nicely, so select a hearty red such as a Merlot or Zinfandel. We recommend: Seven Deadly Zins Zinfandel.

Cheese pizza doesn’t have a bold or overpowering taste like some other pizzas. This means you can pair it with a lighter red, such as Pinot Noir or some Italian wines, and have the two simpler flavors meld together. We recommend: Masciarelli Montepulciano D’Abruzzo.

Hawaiian pizza, unlike other pizzas, has a wonderful sweetness because of the fruit and ham. Pair this pizza with a lightly sweet Riesling to match the pineapple’s sweeter flavor. We recommend: Seaglass Riesling.

This classic Italian pizza appears to be simple, but the flavors of basil and cheese can be troublesome to pair with. A light white wine, such as Pinot Grigio, will complement the pizza’s flavors without taking away from them. We recommend: Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio.

White cheese sauce with chicken and spinach pair best with something bubbly to cut through the richness. A Prosecco or Champagne will do the trick! We recommend: La Marca Prosecco.

Vegetables and Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc always pair together nicely and on pizza, it’s no different. Choose an unoaked Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc with lower levels of acidity. We recommend: Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc.
