National Rum Day

August 16th is National Rum Day! There are many ways to enjoy rum, even on a hot summer day. We can help you celebrate with our favorite rum recipes below.

Piña Colada

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces white rum
  • 6 ounces cream of coconut
  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 4 cups ice
  • 4 ounces golden or añejo rum
  • Pineapple leaves or wedges for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Place the white rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice and chunks, and ice in a blender. Process until totally blended.
  • Pour into glasses and top with golden rum (it should float on top).
  • Serve with pineapple leaves or slices as garnish if desired.

Mojito

Ingredients

  • 10 large mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/2 ounces white rum
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (from half a lime)
  • Soda water
  • Fresh mint, to garnish
  • Lime, thinly sliced to garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the mint, sugar, and 1/2 ounce of the rum into the bottom of a mortar and pestle, and grind slowly until it turns into a paste.
  2. Add the rest of the rum and allow it to steep for about 5 minutes. If your mortar is too small for the additional rum, transfer the paste to a small bowl and then add the rum.
  3. Fill a glass with ice. Set a small mesh strainer over the glass and strain the mint mixture. Use a spoon to press out every last drop of rum from the paste.
  4. Add the lime juice and top with soda water. Stir together and garnish with a lime wheel or a sprig of mint if you’re feeling extra fancy.

Daiquiri

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups white rum
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice, from about 6 juicy limes
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup simple syrup, depending on your preferred sweetness
  • 1 16-ounce package frozen strawberries
  • 4 cups ice cubes
  • Strawberries, lime wheels, or little umbrellas for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Place the rum, 1/2 cup of the lime juice, 1/4 cup of the simple syrup, strawberries, and ice cubes into a blender and pulse until completely blended with a slushy consistency.
  2. Check the consistency and flavor. Add more lime juice for more tartness or more simple syrup to sweeten, if needed. You may also want more ice to make it slushier in consistency. A daiquiri is not an exact science, so adjust as you see fit.
  3. Divide the daiquiris between glasses. Garnish and serve.
