The rise in popularity of Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey has been fast and furious. Three short years ago, only residents of Ocean Beach, California had even possibly heard of this peanut butter whiskey. Today, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey can be found in all 50 states, including New Hampshire, where it was introduced in 2019. Take note – this is no ordinary flavored spirit. The 2018 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition awarded Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey a Double Gold Medal for Best Flavored Whiskey.
Steven Yeng and Brittany Merrill-Yeng are the husband and wife team behind this delectable treat. They are not your typical spirit-industry “power couple,” they don’t have a background in spirits. Steven started his career in the restaurant world and Brittany’s early career was driven by degrees in biochemistry and law.
One could say this story of the invention is the ultimate American dream. With a brand that is represented by a black sheep on the bottle and a team of “Skrewballs,”, the story is just getting told.
It was in elementary school that the dynamic duo of Steve and Brittany would be formed. Fast forward to Steve opening a restaurant at age 21 and Brittany in school starting to earn her dual degrees. You get a sense of the drive and enthusiasm which has brought this couple—this family—the success they have earned today.
After several years of Steve working off-hours in restaurants and Brittany in the corporate world, they realized they wanted more family time. At this point, their world changed. Utilizing their combined skills, they discovered the magical combination of peanut butter and whiskey, and Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey was born.
It may sound easy, but Brittany notes the challenge of infusing one of America’s favorite loves (peanut butter) with the refined spirit of whiskey.
If you aren’t a fan of peanut butter, you should still try Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey. The unique combination has spirit drinkers sharing a variety of tasting notes. Everything from caramel to hazelnut, a sweet and salty touch, is all noted by fans. Drinkers of Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey have shown a variety of ways to drink it. The master “Skrewballs” will encourage you to start with it simply chilled. Then, graduate to a variety of recipes, such as the Peanut Butter Old Fashioned or Island of Misfits showcased on Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey’s website: www.skrewballwhiskey.com.
The black sheep and “Skrewballs” storyline are best heard directly from Brittany and Steve. It’s clear they wanted to create a brand they could be a part of and that everyone else could instantly find relatable. Perhaps it’s even more relevant today. Brittany shared her perspective, “We saw all walks of life coming together, enjoying Skrewball. People being authentic. People being themselves. People thrive in that environment—when people are being real. We all feel like the black sheep or the outcast at times. People can celebrate that.” The brand represents the real part of life.
Passionately speaking about their followers as fellow “Skrewballs,” Steve and Brittany put their energy towards doing what they can to build a community and to “pay it forward.”
They have been ardent supporters of many causes across the country and continue to commit their success to the improvement of the communities around them. Aside from thousands of dollars, tons of efforts and drives, and even producing 20,000 bottles of sanitizer distributed for free during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team has engineered their latest community-focused effort: Skrew It Forward. The campaign will launch in the next year and will help Skrew Cancer, Skrew Hunger, Skrew Depression. The community efforts are impressive, and welcome in a time when need is at an all‑time high.
