Wine doesn’t always need to be served with an elegant dish! This summer, don’t be afraid to enjoy a bottle of wine with some more casual fare, such as cheeseburgers! There are actually quite a few varieties of wine that will complement your classic burger and fries very well. See our quick wine and cheeseburgers list below.
With burgers in general, you can go in almost any direction with red wine. From light and slightly chilled Beaujolais, to a massively tannic and full-bodied Bordeaux, and just about anywhere in-between. It doesn’t really matter what you put on your cheeseburger, just build it the way you want to.
If you build them with portabella mushrooms and cheddar in the meat blend, Argentinian Malbec is a great option, as Malbec goes wonderfully with mushrooms. On the same note, so does Pinot Noir, which would be a great selection if you want a lighter-styled wine. Pinot also tastes good slightly chilled.
If you build your burgers with Bacon and cheddar, you want a more complex, full-bodied wine like Cabernet or Zinfandel. If you are adding heat, like jalapeno, or Calabrian chilies, Zinfandel or an Australian Shiraz are the way to go, as they each have a pepperiness to them.
Try any of these below!
Bon Appetite!
Ancient Peaks Zinfandel Paso Robles: This is a delicious Zinfandel absolutely perfect for your burger nights. It has a great nose of deep black fruits – especially blackberry – and is lush and smooth in the mouth with a nice hit of black pepper on the finish.
Joel Gott Cab Svgn 815: From Napa Valley’s most iconic hamburger stand (Gott’s Roadside, formerly Taylor’s Refresher) to famous wine producer, you know this wine is LITERALLY MADE for burgers. It is a sleek and plush Cabernet with a great mouth-feel of both red and black fruits. Soft tannins make it quaffable and it’s definitely hearty enough for a gourmet burger with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and sautéed mushrooms.
Achaval Ferrer Malbec Mendoza: This is a great producer of classically styled Malbec. The flavors are rich and dynamic with hints of clove and cassis on the finish. As mentioned above, Malbec loves mushrooms, so if you are going with portabella and cheddar burgers, this is a perfect match. Silky-smooth, with a velvety finish…need we say more?
Peter Lehmann Shiraz: This is a quintessential peppery Shiraz with gobs of black fruit and racy tannins. A great accompaniment to a spicy burger embedded with Calabrian chilies. Enjoy the long peppery finish of this classic Shiraz by a famous producer who’s been in the game for many years.
